| So i was standing in the doorway eating mini pretzels. My dogs were just laying in the sun so I start breaking off pieces and chucking them at the dogs. On of them gets up and sniffs them to see if they're edible. When he realizes what it is, he looks up and gives me this look thats like, "You fucker.." I then walked away. |

| Every now and then i am reminded of how weak and pampered i am. One of my jobs as an intern is to inspect the people seal the cracks in the road. All the workers are mexican, and they all lead hard lives. One of the guys i learned today works extremely hard. His day starts off early in the morning at 4 a.m. He gets up and goes to the headquarters and heads off to his first jobs. Currently he comes to arcadia to seal the cracks. And this is not an easy job. I get tired just walking around in the hot sun and watching them. But they have to operate these heavy stick things that pour out this oil type stuff. They work in teams where at the front they used this hose that blows pressurized air out and occasionally can blow out flames to burn weeds. Then the back is where they fill in the cracks. Anyway, this these guys finish around 2 or 3 each day. Then they go back to the headquarters in Orange County where this guy picks up another job probably a similar thing in another city and finally gets home around 10 at night. Here is a guy who hardly gets any sleep and only gets paid about 9000 a week. He is very strong too. His arms are huge. But heres a guy who must be really tough to endure a life like that. I couldnt imagine myself doing this. I'd probably pass out on the job.. |

| I was never a boyscout. Mainly because my dad was in it, and didnt think highly enough of it to put his sons in it. Even so, i had never seen any point in it other than sometimes eagle scouts get scholarships. A very sterotypical view of boyscouts is that the one thing they do learn, which is how to tie knots. Now, i had never thought that this skill would come in handy other than to show off. But recently, i found that it actually came to use. I am now working as an intern for the city of Arcadia, in the public works district. I went to one of their projects which was to build some sort of dam, well not really a dam, but one that prevents mountain slides. It was right up santa anita ave, on the way to the trails up in the mountains. But anyway, we were surveying the area for the dimensions. And one of the guys had to go on the side of the mountain in order to put a stake in the correct area. But the mountain was so steep that he started slipping and was about to fall. This is where the tense moment starts. I had to run back to the car to grab some rope, then i handed it to the third guy. He was like, "want me to tie a knot?" and he makes this beautiful loop with a knot in it that slipped around the first guy's body. Then i took the other end of the rope and wrapped it around a metal bar so that i could hold him up. Things turned out okay in the end, but i finally got to see how tying knots was useful in an almost life and death situation.
